Peace be with you السلام عليكم

By Furqan Naeem
One of the things I remember fondly was the view at night. As we were high up, there was very little electricity and it was almost complete darkness at night. When we would look up in the skies our eyes would be filled with thousands and thousands of stars shining brightly above the mountains. We saw shooting stars and the view made us wonder about Allah’s creation in our galaxy and beyond it – what is it like in the heavens? His magnificence and the number of His creations just made us increase in His remembrance. When we prayed Maghrib and Isha outside on one of the nights it was so peaceful. We would say salams at the end and when we would look right and left we would have mountains in our direct view on either side. Most times it was a most peaceful prayer and when we prayed we didn’t want to stop.
One verse of the Qur’an that I always remembered throughout the journey was in Surah Hashr where Allah says:
“If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought” (59:21).
This verse made me think about the weight of the Qur’an and how even the mountains would be humble due to the weight of His Majesty. It made me consider the state of the dunya after the final trumpet is blown and how all these rock solid mountains will turn to dust. It made me think about how Allah has made these mountains in order for mankind to reflect and think about His creation, and to know when Allah mentions these mountains in the Qur’an we were amongst the highest ones He has created. That was a moment for us all to deeply ponder.
Every evening we would sit in a circle and someone from among the group would give a thought of the day. Everyone came out with excellent reminders to keep us all thinking and renewing our intentions. Some spoke about how we should appreciate the things we have in life that we take for granted, some spoke about animals that we saw and how much they sacrifice for us humans. Others spoke about how our struggle will help impact the lives of millions who are struggling in the third world. After mentioning the ayah I quoted above, I talked about three lessons we should take back in our lives...

GOOD DEED: #29 Celebrate 'Eid in Ramadan
- Anas (radhiallaahu `anhu) reported that upon arriving in Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ found its people celebrating two days whose significance was held over Jaahiliyyah (ignorance). The Prophet ﷺ said: "When I came upon you, you had two days that you continued to celebrate from the Jaahiliyyah era; indeed Allaah has substituted them for you with what is better: the day of Sacrifice and the day of Fitr (breaking the fast)". [Ahmad, Abu Dawud and others; authentic]
- The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said: Whoever stands up (in worship) in the nights preceding the two Eids expecting rewards from his Lord, his heart will not die when the other hearts will die. (Ibn Majah) ...

Mutual Knowledge
Al-Hujurat (The Chambers) Sura 49: Verse 13
"O people! Indeed We created you from a male and a female, and made you into tribes and nations so that you might know each other. The most noble of you in the sight of God is the one who is most God-fearing. Indeed, God is All-Knowing, Completely Aware."
We all have emotional scars, spiritual disabilities, and stubborn desires that make us less than perfect mirrors for God's divine light. This is why we need to live our faith in community with others - so they can help illuminate our flaws and support us in our spiritual growth. But our growth will be limited unless our communities reflect the diversity of human experience. Parochialism has been an inescapable reality for much of humanity since we first inhabited the earth. In our era, for most people who are not impoverished, parochialism is a choice. It is possible in an age of niche marketing and virtual communities, when we have email list-serves, webpages, radio and TV channels catering to narrow, special interests, to limit our contact to those who reflect our own perspectives and experiences and who do not challenge us to expand our frames of analysis. To do this violates the teaching of the Quran that diverse communities were created by God precisely for the purpose of mutual knowledge, which itself must lead to greater self-knowledge.

God's Messenger, peace be upon him, declares: "You are governed how you are (according to your beliefs and lifestyle.)" [Hindi, Kanz al-Ummal, 6:89]
This hadith expresses a principle of public and political administration: A country's political structure is shaped according to its people's tendencies, whether directly through democracy or indirectly through other ways. Both the natural and the social sciences have their own laws, which we call "God's creational and operations laws of the universe." According to these laws, if people immerse themselves in sin and evil, they inevitably will be ruled by evil people. If, by contrast, they prefer a virtuous life, their government will be good.
The hadith stresses that laws have no sanction on their own; rather, their authority depends on those who apply them. Therefore, the character of government officials is of vital importance. The ruling elites are like the cream rising to the surface of a liquid: milk has its own kind of cream, as do lime and alum. When Hajjaj, a despotic commander, was reminded of Umar's justice, he replied: "If you were like Umar's people, I would be like Umar."
The hadith also tells us to develop self-control and discern our own faults. Social harmony cannot be established if people tend to blame others.

Jahiliyyah
Can we brand a society as one of jahiliyyah, or ignorance, on the basis of the practices of its people? Islam does not slam on such a blanket verdict on the basis of behaviour. It may describe the behaviour itself as belonging to a social pattern or pagan ignorance, as we see in three of the four instances where the word occurs in the Quran: judgement [5:50], women's appearance [33:33] and strong emotions [48:26]. In none of these cases, however, does Islam brand the whole of society as pagan or ignorant. In fact, Islam acknowledges that everyone is capable of committing sinful actions, including serious ones. It urges those who slip into sin to repent so that they can earn God's forgiveness.
A society can be branded as ignorant, or jahili, if it upholds concepts about God that are contrary to His oneness and His essential attributes [3: 154]. It cannot be branded as such on the basis of the behaviour of certain sections in it.

"Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment... I looked at her once, and twice, and yet again. I did not smile at her as I did to everybody else, oh no, I wasn’t about to make her the recipient of my affection. Instead she smiled at me, the cheek of it all, but I merely looked away, ha! A smirk passed over my face and my eyes became cold, devoid of emotion.
I crossed my arms and held my chin high. My heart suddenly clenched, what was unseen though was the little green arrow that pierced it. I didn’t realise, but the arrow rapidly spread a vile poison throughout my body and my mind gulped it all, producing all sorts of loathsome thoughts about that girl. Just because she has the beauty, wealth, and authority, just because she has it all, she thinks she’s better than me. I became certain that if I had all that, I would be so much higher in status than her… I became envious.
And this is probably a flicker of what Satan must have experienced when he refused Allah’s order to bow down to Adam. Satan was envious that Allah commanded him, a creation of fire to bow down to a formation of clay. Jealousy was Satan’s downfall and today, Satan so easily finds his prey, prepares his arrow and shoots; his work thus done. The prey is now inflicted with a disease, hot bubbling venom runs through its bloodstream, a cancer ensnares its mind and just like Satan, the human also begins his spiritual demise.
Envy (hasad) is one of the first diseases that mankind is inflicted with and probably ranks the highest in the hierarchy of the most dangerous. We all have, at some point, experienced envy and jealousy towards someone else’s God given blessing, whether that is beauty, wealth, authority or any other worldly matter. It is human nature to want and when someone has something more than us, for some oblivious reason we think we deserve it more, almost as if Allah made a mistake in bestowing that person with this blessing when it was rightfully ours. We forget that Allah is All-Wise in what He distributes to His creation. We forget that He is Just and has given us our share too, and if not in this world then in the Hereafter, which should immediately make everything better, for the Hereafter is our ultimate destination.
The Prophet (pbuh) said that envy consumes good deeds the way fire devours at dry wood, but the Prophet (pbuh) also mentioned that any possessor of a good is exposed to envy. Thus, envy is common to human nature, almost inherent and the best way to combat it is to turn it into something good or eradicate it by contradicting it. For example, presenting a gift to the other person, praising them (instead of slandering) or even doing a particular dua’ (pray) for them and mentioning their name will starve envy of the negative thoughts it produces, and not to forget it will and bag us some good deeds as well. Or how about a heartfelt smile (when all you really feel like doing is snatching that person’s blessing away from them!), this is a good way to tame envy and it might just be that you and the envied(well, the no longer envied) strike up a good relationship.
If one has envy however, it should be of non-worldly matters and righteous intentions. For example envy of one who is blessed with wisdom and knowledge can be very motivating as it encourages us to seek knowledge. Also, envying one who is blessed with abundant wealth and who spends it in charity is fine because the intention is to carry out a good deed. Even if we do not acquire that wealth and do not have the opportunity to give so copiously, we mustn’t forget that even thinking about carrying out a righteous action will bag us a good deed.

Original post on [Sound Vision]
The Qur'an
1. "We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents; in hardship did his mother bear him, and in hardship did she give him birth..." (46:15).
2. "Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt (uff), nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor. And out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say: ‘My Lord! bestow on them Thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood' "(17:23-24).
3. "And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them...'" (29:8).
4. "We have enjoined on man and woman (to be good) to his/her parents; show gratitude to Me and to thy parents; to Me is (thy final) Goal. If they (parents) strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not; yet bear them company in this life with justice (and consideration) and follow the way of those who turn to Me (in love)" (31:14-15).
The Hadith
1. The Prophet Muhammad said, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him: Your Heaven lies under the feet of your mother (Ahmad, Nasai).
2. A man came to the Prophet and said, ‘O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet said: Your mother. The man said, ‘Then who?' The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, ‘Then who?' The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again, ‘Then who?' The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, Muslim).
3. Abu Usaid Saidi said: We were once sitting with Rasulullah when a man from the tribe of Salmah came and said to him: O Messenger of Allah! do my parents have rights over me even after they have died? And Rasulullah said: Yes. You must pray to Allah to bless them with His Forgiveness and Mercy, fulfill the promises they made to anyone, and respect their relations and their friends (Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah).
4. Abdullah ibn Amr related that the Messenger of Allah said: The major sins are to believe that Allah has partners, to disobey one's parents, to commit murder, and to bear false witness (Bukhari, Muslim).
5. It is narrated by Asma bint Abu Bakr that during the treaty of Hudaibiyah, her mother, who was then pagan, came to see her from Makkah. Asma informed the Messenger of Allah of her arrival and also that she needed help. He said: Be good to your mother (Bukhari, Muslim).
Mother's day is every day for a Muslim. Love your mother, show your love; one day she will return to Allah.
