Living the Qur'an
A Wise Plan
Qur'an, Al-Fajr - The Dawn, (89:1-5)
"By the dawn, by the ten nights, by that which is even and that which is odd, by the night as it journeys on! Is there not in that an oath for a man of sense?"Much difference of opinion has been expressed by the commentators in the commentary of these verses, so much so that in respect of "the even and the odd" there are as many as 36 different views. In some traditions the commentary of these verses has also been attributed to the Prophet (upon whom be peace), but the fact is that no commentary is confirmed from him, otherwise it was not possible that anyone from among the Companions, their immediate successors, and later commentators would have dared to determine the meaning of these verses by himself after the commentary by the Prophet...

A stone’s throw south of the Somali border lies a little known island called Lamu, a UNESCO protected heritage site that maintains one of the best preserved Swahili cultures in East Africa. The Tumblr blog Muslims Wearing Things was launched as a reaction to former NPR analyst Juan Willams saying he has an irrational fear and gets nervous when he sees people in Muslim garb on planes. Apparently, he thought you can identify Muslims on what they look like. Tut, tut, little does he know. This indifferent but brilliant blog posts daily photos of Muslims wearing all sorts of things in an attempt to refute that there is such a thing as "Muslim garb" or a Muslim look. (Muslim women included here, because I'm biased).
Would somebody please rescue this oppressed Pakistani Muslim woman garbed in her G-Suit and lipstick, all set to fly high and kick some terrorist butt?
Lauren Booth dons an inadvertently trendy keffiyeh.
These wonder women - Hawa Abdi (center), and her daughters Amina Mohamed (left) and Deqo Mohamed (right) have their own individual tastes and styles outside of the operating room and clinic, where they don traditional Muslim scrubs and white coats when treating mostly women and children - usually for free.
Haifa Fahoum Al Kaylani is gorgeous in this classic Muslim Mad Men like ensemble.

Social, Spiritual, and Political Effects of Hajj

| The annual pilgrimage to BaitUllah, House of God, affects millions of pilgrims and connects them spiritually with Muslims at home |
Hajj is the life and blood of the concept of Tawheed. Hajj is the most vivid manifestation of belief in Tawheed. Hajj is the open and defying negation of all false gods. Hajj is refutation of all false parameters of greatness made and maintained by ignorance and arrogance. Hajj is the most evident and effective lesson of equality and brotherhood to mankind. Hajj is the foundation stone of unity in one belief and faith in One God. Hajj destroys racism, murders casteism, eradicates regionalism, eliminates nationalism, and systematically annihilates polytheism from the minds of worshipers gathered in His house under His watch to submit before His will.
Hajj is the most complete worship and the most comprehensive act of submission before the Lord of the Worlds. Hajj is hope for humanity wounded by materialism and robbed by polytheism. Hajj disciplines the human, teaches Tawheed, purifies the soul, creates unity with other fellow believers without arrogance, prepares the mind for death, ushers in a feeling of humbleness, and – most importantly – strengthens the faith of a true believer in Him.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) says: "Allah has made obligatory upon you…the pilgrimage, for it consolidates the faith." (Nahj al-Balagha)
Social Philosophy of Hajj
Hajj is the symbol of unity and universality. Of all the rites of Islam, the Hajj is the greatest in manifestation of unity and Tawheed
The Hajj: Foundation of Unity
The problems of life can be solved by social cooperation, which is dependent on understanding among nations. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) said on the mount of Arafat:
"O people, surely your Lord is One, the father of all of you is one, you all come from Adam and Adam from the earth. (Surely the most honorable of you with Allah is the one among you most careful of his duty) Arab has no advantage over non-Arab except for piety." (Tuhaf al-Uqool)
The Hajj is the most vivid manifestation and lesson of this equality: all dress in similar kind of clothes, all bow before One Lord, all are in the search of one Beloved, all seek one destination, all acknowledge the One Power and all deny all false gods.
The Ka'ba: Sanctuary for Peace
Our Lord says in the Qur'an: "And when We made the House a pilgrimage for men and a (place of) security." (2:125)

The Ka'ba: Emblem of Islam
In traditions, the Holy Ka'ba has been regarded as the emblem of Islam. Imam Ali says: "Allah the Glorified has made it (the Sacred House) an emblem for Islam." (Nahj al-Balagha)
The pilgrimage represents the essence and spirit of Islam. Allah has made the Ka'ba an emblem for Islam so that those who err in recognizing the truth of this religion and its deductive programs may reflect upon the Hajj rites and its spiritual effects on Muslims, and thereby find the true nature of Islam – the religion of purity and sincerity, away from polytheism and what is ungodly. The Hajj reflects the essence of Islam: complete devotion towards Him, self-sacrifice, equality, and no discrimination on the basis of colour, race, caste, wealth or might.
Spiritual Effects Of Hajj
The external acts of Hajj symbolize the spiritual stages of the Prophets and Imams. Hajj is the display of the spiritual journey of His devotees and the stages of servitude. The essence of worship is the journey towards Allah, and the external acts of Hajj – if devoid of presence of the heart – are not considered as worship. The Holy Prophet said: "The daily prayer, Hajj, circumambulation, and other rites are aimed at remembering Allah. But when there is no remembrance of Him in your heart, what value will your oral remembrance have?" (Jaami'us-Sa'aadat)
Worship is the journey of the soul and a continued spiritual life in divine light. A true Hajj is the evolution of one's soul. The Hajj has deep and wonderful influences on the spiritual life of Hajjis. It gives them a new life and a new direction; most of the Hajjis, after returning back after completing the Hajj, are full of determination. We must take care that after returning from Hajj, we should not go back to committing sins. The purpose of the Hajj is purification of soul and refinement of faith. The rites of Hajj are particularly unappealing to human mood – staying in the open, walking bare-foot, throwing of stones at Satan, facing sun and cold of night, and many other such rites which would not appeal so much to us in other situations. But the purpose behind all such rites is to make man humble and submissive in entirety before His Lord.
Political Effects of Hajj
Hajj is a grand international assembly and forum of Muslims. It has great political aspects. This is the right season and the right place to protest against the arrogant oppressors of the world. This is the place where big haughty superpowers should be made to know that Muslims are the servants of none except the Almighty Allah.
In the words of Imam Khomeini: "Regrettably, many Muslims, have become oblivious of the political dimension of this exalted worship, due to their own deviation, or, misunderstanding of some individuals or conspiracies by some self-seeking functionaries."
He also said: "The Hajj obligation which entails saying 'Labbayk' to Allah and departure from the ego towards the Supreme Being, by the blessed guidance of Abraham and Muhammad, in fact this is a station for negation of all idols and the tyrants of the time, and the devils and the devil breed…"
Hajj: Focus of Strife Against Arrogance
At this sacred place, tyranny must be opposed and the struggle of Muslims against arrogant superpowers must be brought into focus.
Imam Khomeini said: "Sacrifice yourselves and your dear ones in order to enact and promote Allah's religion and divine justice. He taught us all, that Mecca and Mina are alters of the attached devotees, and the sites for promoting monotheism and negating polytheism, as, attachment to one's life and dear ones, is also counted polytheism."
It would be most appropriate to quote Imam Khomeini's statement at this place describing the philosophy of rites performed during Hajj: "While repeating 'Labbayk', say 'no' to all idols and cry out 'no' to all the princes of the devils and the prince kins of the devils; and while circumambulating Allah's sanctuary which denotes your love to Allah, disengage your hearts from the rest, and purge your soul from phobias of other than Allah. And along with your love to Allah, divulge your hatred of the little and big idols and the devils and their affiliates, as the Exalted Allah and His friends have expressed hatred of them, and all the liberated people of the world do hate them.
"And while touching the Black Stone, pledge to Allah to turn into an enemy against the enemies of Allah, His Messengers, the liberated and pious men and never yield to them, no matter who and where they might be. And wipe away phobia and inferiority from your hearts, for Allah's enemies – and above them all, the arch Satan – are themselves helpless, though being superior in committing homicide and suppression and the implementation of crimes..."
Dislike of Paganism
Hajj, the biggest manifestation of Tawheed, must be an occasion for making obvious our hatred for pagan beliefs.
On this topic, Imam Khomeini said: "Airing disgust at the pagans, being a pillar of monotheism and political necessity of Hajj, must be performed with as much grandeur and dignity as possible."

Exclusive Interview: Tony Blair's Sister-in-Law, Lauren Booth, Talks About Her Conversion to Islam

Why did Tony Blair's sister-in-law convert to Islam?
![]() |
Lauren Booth, journalist, campaigner and on-air reporter for the Iranian Government-owned Press TV channel in London, is not the first Western woman to convert to Islam. But she is one of the most high profile to do so. For good or ill, this is largely based on the fact that she is former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair’s sister in law—and because she has been a high-profile critic of his military ventures from the outset.
I met her recently in her North London apartment just as a U.K.-based, Islamic channel TV crew were leaving, and it soon became apparent that her adoption of the Muslim faith is rooted in something rather more profound than family disputes. Yet despite Booth’s longstanding affinity for the Palestinian cause in particular, it was all a bit of a surprise. What, I wondered, had been the reaction to her explosive piece of news?
"Well in 48 hours I’ve had over 600 messages of congratulations and love," said Booth. "From the Philippines to Peru; from East Timor to East Grinstead. Every Muslim who has wi-fi seems to be sending me congratulations and saying they will support me in the difficult times ahead. Because let’s be honest, I haven’t joined a trendy religion, I haven’t taken up Scientology with the wealthy. This is a difficult one and it is done with real conviction..."

Anti-Semitism & Islamophobia - Two sides of the same coin |
What: Muslims Against Anti-Semitism (MAAS) are a non-profit organisation that is made up of British Muslims who believe that Anti-Semitism in all of its guises needs to be challenged. MAAS also believe that Anti-Semitism can and usually does evolve and mutate into other xenophobic ideologies, whether this is Islamophobia or ideologies against migrants who have legally settled in the UK.
Islam at its core is about emancipation from ignorance and learning and social justice. With this in mind MAAS works towards combating xenophobia and intolerance so that our Jewish brothers and sisters do not feel threatened or frightened because of who they are. "Together, Muslims and Jews can also work towards combating some of the stereotypes and myths perpetuated against Muslims and Islam."
What Goes on: MAAS regularly run talks and lectures with faith communities – in particular the Muslim community, on helping to tackle Anti-Semitism. MAAS also develop and implement innovative social change projects in order to bridge any divides between both the Jewish and Muslim communities in the UK and internationally.
If you believe that co-existence is possible between Muslims and Jews both in the UK and externally and that Anti-Semitism needs to be tackled, then we would like to hear from you. Only by understanding one another and developing an empathy, can we expect others to defend us against the scourge of Islamophobia.

Purify Your Gaze Campaign: 'Imancipate' Your Addiction to Pornography

“…Well, it started in my final year of elementary school abroad when my siblings and I had rented a movie which was rated PG in Asia but PG13 in the West. I realized later on in life I was too young to have watched it. I forgot the name but there was a split second in the movie where the image of a naked woman was shown. I was intrigued to the extent that before returning it I stared at that particular moment alone in our apartment at night, while everyone was sleeping. I must have been 12 years old at the time.
When I returned home I started high school and my first real experience of porn came during a tournament for our high school volleyball team. We had an overnight stay during one of our out-of-town trips and I was in a room with 3 other teammates. They all waited till 12am for a show which played soft-core porn every week on regular TV (no cable). I was disgusted and told the guys ‘I don’t watch this stuff’. I turned away, listening to the movie instead for the next hour. My eyes ventured a couple of times however and I was curious and excited as to what I saw. From there on in I would try to catch the same show at home whenever I got the chance. Staying up that late was a hurdle as well as making sure everyone else was asleep. My usage steadily became more consistent. I also during this time ventured onto the Internet where I would look at pictures of nude women.”
This honest reflection was from one of the participants who worked with me in a recent sexual addiction recovery program I lead called www.PurifyYourGaze.com. He, like hundreds of others opened up to me through the program about how years of secrecy and sexual frustration developed into depression and addiction. It is a common problem for Muslims but a taboo topic that we hide from discussing.
90% of American children have watched porn
Statistics show that 90% of American kids have come into direct contact with pornography or accidentally at least once, by the naive age of 11. The problem therefore often starts before anyone was aware such exposure could lead to such a destructive lifestyle.
One conflicting issue is that the majority of young men and women who ask for help (yes, more sisters are coming forward) would consider themselves as active Muslim participants in their community. As one brother remorsefully said, "I'm involved in my local youth group – I love it, but I feel like such a hypocrite giving these youths guidance while I'm involved in such filth..." So what’s making them continue?
Before you jump to conclusions and suggest, "Muslims need to fear Allah more" or "if they just lowered their gaze they wouldn't have this problem ", there's an important thing you need to know. Lowering your gaze is not always enough.
Clearly, there's something deeper going on here...
The responsibility of Muslim communities
One huge obstacle to the pornography problem has to do with how we as a Muslim community, function. Although we have developed strong strategies in addressing contemporary social issues, there is still the pervading black and white version of Islam where our method of problem solving is thrown into categories of either halaal or haraam. With this view, there is little room to give real-life solutions to real-life problems. Many brothers looking for help, or wives who discover their husbands’ pornography use, seek guidance from the only place they know - a fatwa website. But these offer little help. The addict already knows his behavior is haraam, what he needs is a step-by-step solution to completely stop.
Maybe at best, you could attend a khutbah at the masjid on the importance of controlling your desires, where the khateeb will give Qur'an and Sunnah evidences that “yes it's hard, but you need to lower your gaze, get married, or fast, and your problem is solved.” And that's the end of that conversation for another year. So for the one listening for hopeful answers, they get the same message they already knew: “you better repent and try harder, or else you won't be a complete Muslim."
Trying harder is not the solution to quitting
Cures exist, although only the symptoms of this problem are being treated rather than the causes of why such behavioral pattern appears. In psychological terms this is only a first-order change and essentially is similar to the French saying, “the more things change, the more they remain the same”. The more we try to change a problem on the outer surface by sweepingly diagnosing the symptoms, the more the madness within remains exactly the same. We do not need a diagnosis or a cure. We need a practical prevention.
One of the great traditions established in America is the 12-step program, which was created by two alcoholics looking to recover in a wholesome way and avoid the flippant "I'll man-handle this addiction" attitude. The first step in all 12-step recovery groups is the admission of the “powerlessness in our situation”, and the need to let go of "knowing everything" about the case. Further, recognizing that “life had become unmanageable” opens up the avenue that there is a new way of living and handling life.
As Muslims we live by the very same message given to our Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, to "Recite by the Name of your Lord…" (Qur’an, 96:1). Volumes have been written on the Arabic letter "baa" translated here as "by", pointing to the power of seeking aid outside of yourself, seeking help by the Power and Might of Allah the Almighty. As the verses continue, we are told about “man’s transgression. Because he thinks himself to be self-sufficient,” (Qur’an, 96:6-7) and that is exactly what happens when the addict keeps continuing the insanity of trying to solve it alone. The role for us as a community and for individuals affected by the manifestations of sexual addiction is not to just keep trying harder.
The key is to come to a place of self-acceptance and acceptance of ourselves as a community that we have a shared problem here which will not go away by simply promising to resist. There are chemical effects to addiction, factors such as social pressures and limitations, addicts in a family, and deeper psychological issues are all at play.
What does self-acceptance look like?
Acceptance of the self is a concept I teach my students called Finding Power Through Powerlessness. This is important for an individual on recovery as it means a death of the self-sufficiency. Instead of isolating and fixing the problem, the individual will crave excitement, moving from one addiction to another, never fully at peace or guilt-free. It is what God describes in Surah Al-Baqarah, "And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah..." (Qur’an, 2:165) By not accepting that their dependency on God gives them strength, they go through life afraid that without a deep foundation to rely on, they will drown. So they jump from one worldly hunger to another, trying to find that safety, and peace.
Acceptance of the self is being able to progress from a place of denial, self-sufficiency and arrogance to a place of humility, submission and surrender. We must learn to accept that there are some things in life we just can't do alone, and yes, we are broken by them, but they are in fact blessings in another form from Allah the Almighty.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah wonders at those people who will enter Paradise in chains." (Sahih Al-Bukhari) The hadith refers to captives of war, who choose to surrender their will to Allah – they are chained, but free. By the same token we are sometimes brought to Allah through the chains of our desires, and when we surrender our will to Him and admit we can't do this alone, we have found freedom.
Overcoming an addiction to pornography cannot be done alone, but that does not necessitate that the individual in this journey is someone evil. Incidentally, being chosen as someone to learn the life lesson of humility, of admitting your powerlessness and fully surrendering your will to Allah, is an experience most people in life will not have.
This is just the beginning of our conversations as a group on the seriousness of pornography addiction and rectifying immoral sexual behaviour, as well as its harm on the individual, the spouse, children and the wider community. (please read end note)
I am currently spearheading an initiative called Purify Your Gaze, based upon the famous Qur’anic verses (24:30-1) that address the believers to lower their gaze in order to attain purity, while dealing with the realities of pornography addiction in the Muslim community. Until the launch of this campaign (21st Nov 2010), we hope to gather statistical data on the effects of addiction on addicts including spouses, who are often very ignored in this process. Insha’Allah we will release the findings of this study to the public.
Please participate in and share the following link: www.PurifyYourGaze.com/case-study.
I ask for the community's support and encourage those who are interested to visit the website to take part in this awareness campaign. And from Allah comes all success.
